The Huntsdale Area Scouting Auxiliary (HASA) was founded in 1952 as the Troop 185 Parents Auxiliary. Over the next 68 years, this organization would grow to support Cub Scouts and Venturers as well as the Troop. The organization went under a major reorganization to better support our beneficiaries in the summer of 2021. We applied for and were granted 501(c)(3) status on 09 September 2021 as a 509(a)(2) charity.
HASA’s primary mission is to support Scouting in the Huntsdale area. To fulfill this mission, HASA performs fundraisers to provide the necessary funds to support the local Scouting units. In the last 12 months, HASA has provided over $20,000 to these units. HASA also provides a meeting location, equipment trailer, camping equipment and other necessary supplies to the Scouting units.
Boy Scout Troop 185 was chartered on July 5, 1950 into the Keystone Area Council, which is now a part of the New Birth of Freedom Council. The Troop and Cub Pack, which was chartered in 1952, have maintained continuous registration for over 60 years. We are sponsored by The Penn Township Volunteer Fire Co. No. 50, which is located in the village of Huntsdale, 1750 Pine Road, Newville, Pa 17241.
HASA leases and maintains a two acre tract of mountain ground located near the base of South Mountain, Cumberland Co., Pa. On that two acre tract, HASA also maintains an 1,800 sq. ft. meeting house. Known as “THE SCOUTHOUSE”, this facility is used exclusively for Scout meetings, camp outs and other related activities.
Over 500 Scouts and Scouters have been on or currently on our membership rolls. We have a very active hiking and camping schedule, along with several community service events planned during this year. We currently have 17 adults and 20 plus youth members registered.
Scouting skills and advancement are given a high priority along with leadership development and putting the Scouting Principles into everyday practice. The Troop has produced 42 Eagle Scouts, which is over twice the national average. Because of our rural location and environment our membership numbers are not high, but the quality of the program is. In 2021, eleven Scouts and leaders from Troop 185 completed their Philmont Trek.
HASA is an active organization, which staffs and operates fund raising events. This provides the dollars necessary to maintain our facilities and programs. If you embrace commitment and hard work mixed with a good dose of fun and fellowship, perhaps Troop, Crew and Pack 185 might be the right place for you and your son!!!
The Scouthouse is located at 12 Irish Gap Road, Newville, Pa 17241 (near the village of Huntsdale)
HASA subsidized the 2021 trip to Philmont.
